Cluely's GitHub organisation has only two public repositories. Searches for leaked credentials, API keys, Firebase configs, or AWS keys associated with Cluely returned nothing. Automated credential scanners like TruffleHog and GitGuardian would have flagged any such file. Nothing was flagged.
Every source traces back to competitor marketing. This is the part that should make you raise an eyebrow. Every blog post and review site that cites the "83K breach" is either a direct competitor selling their own interview tool, or an affiliate site earning commissions from competitor referral links. Not a single independent journalist, security researcher, or neutral source has corroborated the claim.
Who Benefits From a Fabricated Breach?
Follow the money. The competitors citing this breach are using it in their SEO content to rank for searches like "is Cluely safe" and "Cluely alternative." They write a review of Cluely, cite the unverified breach to scare readers, then recommend their own product at the bottom of the article. It's negative SEO dressed up as journalism.
Cluely's CEO, Roy Lee, is known for rage-bait marketing - he's openly discussed at TechCrunch Disrupt how outrage drives user acquisition. But even Lee wouldn't fabricate a breach against his own company. That hurts him, not his competitors. This story was seeded by competing products, and neither Lee nor Cluely ever publicly acknowledged, denied, or addressed the claims - a silence that itself suggests the allegations weren't worth dignifying.
But Here's the Thing - Cluely's Real Security Problems Are Worse
Debunking the fake breach isn't a defence of Cluely. Far from it. Their actual, independently verified security record is genuinely alarming. Here's what's documented:
Jack Cable's Electron App Reverse Engineering (June 2025)
Jack Cable - formerly at CISA, now at corridor.dev, with over 10,000 HackerOne reputation - decompiled Cluely's desktop app and found it was a mess. System prompts were stored in plaintext, revealing that Cluely uses GPT-4.1 and Claude Sonnet 3.7. The Electron app had no sandboxing. A postMessage vulnerability allowed any website opened through Cluely to access internal application handlers.
